In the unprecedented showing, “From Previs to Final in Five Minutes: A Breakthrough in Live Performance Capture,” Epic Games, Ninja Theory, Cubic Motion and 3Lateral reunited to demonstrate a new way of shooting CG scenes in real-time dubbed Real-Time Cinematography. House of Moves, IKinema, Technoprops and NVIDIA provided additional support for the new live performance.
Using previously shown virtual human technology, a complex scene from Ninja Theory’s upcoming game, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, was shot, captured and edited to final quality in minutes, a process that would normally take weeks or months. This new technique is different from current previsualization methods used in movies and games that only show crude representations of characters and worlds.
With real-time cinematography every nuance of the digital character’s facial expressions, lighting, visual effects and sets are visible in real time to final render quality. Rather than capturing to film, everything is rendered as digital 3D data directly into Unreal Engine 4 using its powerful new Sequencer tool.
Following capture, the scene can be edited, played back in real time, exported to offline 3D applications and output to video at any resolution or published to virtual reality. The technique has the potential to profoundly impact the creation of movies, games and VR experiences in the near future.
Representing the live exhibition are Tameem Antoniades, chief creative director of Ninja Theory; Kim Libreri, CTO of Epic Games; Michael Gay, director of cinematic production at Epic Games; Dr. Gareth Edwards, CEO of Cubic Motion; and Vladimir Mastilovic, CEO of 3Lateral Studio.
